Sustainability

Councils have legal duties to promote sustainable development. Essentially, sustainability means that we should not make decisions today that limit the ability of future generations to live healthy lives. It just means planning and delivering for the long term, rather than short-term gain. A sustainable approach to working seeks to provide social and environmental wellbeing through economic wellbeing. There are environmental limits which must underpin everything that councils and citizens do: in simple terms, we have one planet, but currently in Wales we are using resources as if there were 3 planets – hence why we are a contributor to climate change. A sustainable approach therefore seeks prosperity not wealth, sufficiency not limitless scale, unless growth is achieved at no cost to social and environmental wellbeing.
